About Us

In 1971, the College of Business was created and the Department of Economics was one of three departments formed from the former Department of Economics and Business.  As the city of Charlotte has grown, UNC Charlotte has grown and transitioned from a regional teaching university to become North Carolina’s Urban Research University. The Department of Economics has followed a similar transition towards a research active environment while maintaining expectations of high standards in the classroom and service to the community.

The Department of Economics currently has 17 tenured and tenure-track faculty and 4 full-time non-tenure-track faculty. We employ a number of part-time faculty, many of whom are active or retired professionals in the area.  In addition to our full-time faculty, these professionals provide an important link to the business community.

The Department of Economics is committed to the Belk College of Business vision of being a leading urban research business school. Research, teaching, and service form the foundation of academic life. Research is the process of creating knowledge and a critical component of that foundation. Leading researchers bring their current knowledge to the classroom, educating the students of today, and leaders and researchers of tomorrow. In addition, leading researchers have the ability to inform both business and government policy.

While research areas change as faculty change, and new lines of inquiry form with each new colleague, the Department of Economics currently has a strong core of applied quantitative and econometric researchers investigating economic, business, and social policies. Our programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels contain many courses that develop and apply these analytical skills that prepare students for the workplace and further study. We invite you to look through the Department of Economics website and faculty profiles to get a better understanding of the programs in which we participate, the research we do, and how that research is translated into the classroom and policy.
