The Belk College of Business, Barings and the Charlotte Business Journal are partnering to bring UNC Charlotte economist Dr. John Connaughton to The Ritz-Carlton for a Mid-Year Economic Update covering the state and U.S. trends. NOTE: This is a special event in place of the Economic Forecast this quarter.
The program begins with a luncheon and keynote presentation by UNC Charlotte economist Dr. John Connaughton, followed by a panel discussion moderated by Dr. Steven Ott, Dean of the Belk College. The panel will include Connaughton, Matt Martin, senior vice president at the Federal Reserve Bank of Richmond and Charlotte regional executive, and John Silvia, managing director and the chief economist for Wells Fargo.
Dr. John Connaughton is considered one of the top economists in North Carolina. He joined the UNC Charlotte faculty in 1978 and has served as director of the quarterly Barings/UNC Charlotte Economic Forecast since 1981. Dr. Connaughton also covers national and international economic issues including employment, energy, trade and government spending.
Matt Martin is based in the Bank's Charlotte office with responsibility for Federal Reserve functions across North Carolina and South Carolina. Organizationally, his duties include leadership of the Charlotte office and responsibility for the Bank's Outreach and Statistics and Reserve Accounts departments for the Federal Reserve's Fifth District, which includes North and South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and most of West Virginia. He also serves on the Bank's senior management team.
Dean Steven Ott joined the UNC Charlotte faculty in 1999 and held the appointment of John Crosland, Sr. Distinguished Professor of Real Estate and Development. Dr. Ott was the founding director of the Childress Klein Center for Real Estate and was instrumental in the development of the graduate real estate curriculum in the Belk College. He was appointed Dean of the Belk College in 2011. As Dean, he has directed the College through a period of strong growth in student enrollment, academic programming and private support. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
John Silvia is a managing director and the chief economist for Wells Fargo. Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, he has held his position since he joined Wachovia, a Wells Fargo predecessor, in 2002 as the company's chief economist. Before his current position, John worked on Capitol Hill as senior economist for the U.S. Senate Joint Economic Committee and chief economist for the U.S. Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee. Before that, he was chief economist of Kemper Funds and managing director of Scudder Kemper Investments, Inc.
