May 2019 – B.S.B.A. Business Administration with a concentration in Business Analytics and May 2020 – M.S. Economics

In your opinion, what are the 3 best things about UNC Charlotte?
UNC Charlotte is still young and there’s still room to create traditions.

The school is located close to Charlotte, which is one of the largest financial capitals in the United States.

A varied abundance of internships are readily available nearby.

Where is your favorite place on campus?
The 8th floor of the library is my favorite place. From there you can see the city skyline and the quiet seclusion of the library makes it a wonderful place to study.

What is your favorite Charlotte restaurant?
My favorite restaurant is easily Capital Grille. I’ve only been there on occasion, but it makes for a great night out.

What is your favorite class that you have taken and why?
My favorite course has been Urban Transportation Problems. This course provided a unique look into traffic planning and the economics of urban planning. It was fascinating to evaluate several of the traffic issues facing Charlotte today.

Tell us 3 random things about yourself.
My first job was at a car wash near my high school.

I love to ride my motorcycle when I get a chance.

I played golf competitively during high school.

Micah Thomas is in the prestigious Belk Scholars Program, in which he will receive a bachelor's degree and master's degree in five years with specialization and training in business analytics.

What major(s) are you pursuing and why?
B.S. in Business Administration degree with a concentration in Business Analytics
and Economics: I have a great passion for the field of economics and a genuine enjoyment of the subject. As for business analytics, I am excited to have an opportunity to get involved in one of the fastest growing careers.
In high school, I had a wonderful civics and economics teacher who exposed me to the theory and field of economics. He took extra time to explain and discuss issues extraneous to the curriculum to help satisfy my curiosity. If it was not for his passion, I would not have found my passion in economics. Business analytics was a logical option because of that passion and the Belk Scholars Program in particular was appealing due to the potential for advanced studies into economics.

What is business analytics to someone who may not know and why is business analytics an important program?
Business analytics is the use of advanced data modeling and statistics to improve and maximize procedural efficiency. Business analytics is a new field and projected to be a very large field in the near future.

Why did you choose the Belk College of Business/UNC Charlotte?
My decision to come to UNC Charlotte revolved primarily around the opportunity given to me through the Belk Scholars Program. I had many other options in school choice but in the end, the program is what won me over. Through the Belk Scholars Program, I have been provided a full scholarship and the chance to earn a bachelor's and a master’s degree in five years.

What activities are you involved in when not working or studying?
Aside from work and school, I am involved in the Business Honors Program and the student organization Advancing Innovative Minds. In addition to my scholastic responsibilities, I also serve as an Avionic Mechanic in the North Carolina National Guard.

What has been the best part of your academic experience so far?
The best part of my experience has been my interactions with other students. College more than almost every other place provides the opportunity to debate and examine different perspectives and ideas.

How would you describe the Belk College of Business to someone who is thinking about applying?
The Belk College of Business is a professional environment complete with staff that want to see you exceed your goals.

If you have received a scholarship or financial aid, how has that helped you?
I received a scholarship through the Belk Scholars Program. When I found out that I got into the program, i
t was a great relief to me because I knew that UNC Charlotte was where I wanted to be and the college search was now over. The scholarship has allowed me more time to focus on school and the clubs that I am involved with. There is no need for me to work more than to provide supplemental income. That weight and stress being lifted has been very beneficial to my ability to succeed as a student.

What are your plans after graduation?
I plan to pursue a career in the financial sector. My long-term goal is to become a policy advisor in any capacity to public officials.
