Registering for Courses

Student Responsibility & Course Enrollment

Students are responsible for the management of their course registrations. Through the registration process, students accept academic and financial responsibility for the courses in which they enroll. These responsibilities include:

• Following policies and procedures as outlined in the UNC Charlotte Undergraduate Catalog and other documents relevant to their degree progression
• Selecting courses appropriate for their academic goals, enrolling in these courses, verifying drop, add, withdrawal, and grading transactions via 49er Express
• Abiding by University deadlines that pertain to course enrollment and graduation
• Payment of tuition and fees by the specified deadline

Course Level and Prerequisite Restrictions

The Belk College restricts the registration of upper-division business courses (3000-level) to majors only who have attained Junior or Senior standing and satisfied course prerequisites. To find out if you meet the requirements to declare your major, click here

Course prerequisites are strongly enforced and cannot be waived. Pre-Accounting, Pre-Business, and Pre-Economics students may register for 3000-level Core Courses provided that all necessary prerequisites have been met, including a minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA.  Click here to view a list of the Business Core Courses and their respective prerequisites.

The Belk College reserves the right to remove students from any business course for which prerequisites (including minimum GPA requirements) have not been successfully met. Students may view course descriptions that contain prerequisites and other restrictions in the Undergraduate Catalog.

Repeating Courses

A student may receive credit for a course one time only, (including those for which transfer credit is awarded), unless the course description specifies that it “may be repeated for credit.” However, students may repeat a course to improve their GPA. In doing so, the student forfeits the earned hours for the repeated class. Repeated courses are included in the student’s overall GPA calculation and both attempts will be listed on the transcript.

Students are permitted two attempts at any course in the Belk College of Business. This includes all: (1) Progression Requirements, (2) Core Requirements, and (3) Major Requirements. Students who earn less than a grade of C within two attempts in any of these required courses will be ineligible to continue in the major. Students are permitted to invoke the Grade Replacement Policy for business courses; however, the repeated course(s) will still count as an attempt.

The Grade Replacement Policy

This policy allows students to choose up to two (2) courses (maximum of 8 hours), in which to replace the grade by repeating the course in a different semester. Both grades are reflected on the transcript, however, the higher of the two grades will be used in the calculation of the overall GPA. Students must file for Grade Replacement online by the specified deadline in the term in which the course is to be repeated.

Below are some important policies about grade replacement:

• A repeated course may not be selected retroactively
• Once the online form is submitted, the choice cannot be revoked by withdrawing from the class or University
• A course repeated under the Grade Replacement Policy still counts as an “attempt” in the Belk College of Business

Closed Class Policy

Students will NOT be added to any closed classes. Here are three strategies to use that will increase your chances of adding a course that is currently closed in the Belk College of Business.

1. Continue to monitor the online Schedule of Classes every day. Students will sometimes drop a class the closer it gets to the First Day of Classes.
2. Check the online Schedule of Classes more frequently 3-5 days before the First Day of Classes. Students are paying more attention to their schedules on these days because classes begin in the next few days.
3. Students that have not paid their tuition and fees by the appropriate due dates will be dropped from their classes. Check the Academic Calendar for these two dates.

*Remember to speak with your Academic Advisor about alternate course options if the course you currently seek is closed.
