Course Planning

How to Progress in the Belk College of Business

Based on the current University Catalog. For students enrolled prior to this time, contact the Advising Center for degree information.


Pre-Major Status

Students admitted to the Belk College of Business (BCOB) are classified as PACC (Pre-Accounting), PBUS (Pre-Business), or PECO (Pre-Economics) while they are completing General Education Requirements during the first two years of study.

There are seven (7) courses referred to as Progression Courses that are mandatory for those classified as a Pre-Major. Progression courses must be completed with a minimum of 4 Bs and 3 Cs (2.5 GPA) within two attempts. The most recent attempt will be used in the calculation of the 2.5 Progression GPA. The Progression courses are:

  • INFO 2130 – Introduction to Business Computing
  • MATH 1120 – Calculus
  • STAT 1220 – Elements of Statistics I
  • ACCT 2121 – Principles of Accounting I *
  • ACCT 2122 – Principles of Accounting II *
  • ECON 2101 – Principles of Economics – Macro
  • ECON 2102 – Principles of Economics – Micro
     
  • * B.S. in Economics, with a Liberal Arts Emphasis, requires ENGL 1101 and 1102 as substitute courses for ACCT 2121 and 2122.

In addition to the Progression courses, students must fulfill nine (9) courses referred to as Core Courses. Core courses must be completed with a minimum grade of C (2.0 GPA) within two attempts.  They are:

  • BLAW 3150 – Business Law
  • COMM 3160 – Business Communications
  • ECON 3125 – Managerial Economics (Course not required for Accounting majors)
  • FINN 3120 – Financial Management
  • INFO 3130 – Management Information Systems
  • MGMT 3140 – Management and Organizational Behavior
  • MGMT 3280 – Business Policy (Course not required for Economics majors)
  • MKTG 3110 – Marketing Concepts
  • OPER 3100 – Operations Management

Declaring an Upper-Division Major

During the final two years of study, students will select an Upper-Division Major. Major Courses vary by discipline and typically require between five (5) and seven (7) additional courses at the 3000 level.

After earning 60 credit hours, a minimum 2.5 GPA overall, and at least 4 Bs and 3Cs within two attempts in the Progression courses; students may declare their major. Students must meet with their Academic Advisor to complete a “Change of Major” form. Once they are officially declared, students will then be able to enroll in 3000 level major-specific coursework.


Graduation Requirements

Students will graduate from the Belk College of Business when they have:

 1. Filed an application for graduation online by the published deadline
 2. Fulfilled the Progression, Core, and Major Requirements of the Belk College of Business with a GPA of 2.0 or better (all attempts at UNC Charlotte are calculated)
 3. Completed a minimum of 120 credit hours including the General Education Requirements; 60 of which must be considered non-business hours
 4. Met both University and Belk College of Business residency requirements by completing the last 30 hours at UNC Charlotte, including 50% of the Core and Major requirements
