Employment Opportunities

The Charlotte area has many large insurance companies, brokers and agencies. These companies include Hartford, Nationwide, Auto-Owners, Travelers, AIG, Kemper, Key Risk, TIAA-CREF, Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance, AXA and Mass Mutual Life Insurance.  Among the large property and casualty brokerage firms are Marsh, AON, Willis, Arthur Gallagher Watson Insurance, BB&T and Wachovia.

The risk management and insurance concentration anticipates awarding several scholarships during the academic year. The following donors provide scholarships:

  •  
  • The CPCU Society of Charlotte 
  • Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina (IIANC) 
  • Independent Insurance Agents of Charlotte-Mecklenburg County 
  • Young Agents of the IIANC 
  • Charlotte Association of Insurance Women
  • The Family of Clement R. Marshall, Sr.


The scholarships provided by the Independent Insurance Agents are targeted to students anticipating a career in the independent insurance agency system. There are several different career paths in an independent agency. 
The general criteria by which scholarship awardees will be determined are the following: 

  1. Grade point average (A GPA of 2.5 or higher is required). 
  2. Enrollment in the Risk Management and Insurance concentration 
  3. A self-nominating essay explaining your career interests, plans and goals. 
  4. Evaluation by instructors teaching in the program. 
  5. To be considered for a scholarship from one of the Independent Insurance Agent organizations please clearly state in your cover letter that you would like to apply for one of these scholarships and include in your essay why you would like to work in the independent insurance agency environment.

  • Resume. 
  • Self-nominating essay referenced above. 
  • Unofficial transcript documenting your GPA and that you have declared the insurance concentration.
