Memories

Pounding for Progress: As activists in the mid 80’s I and others were pounding on Dean Neel’s door, convincing him to install a co-op/intern program to better connect to the business community. Returning ten years later for my MBA, we heard the pounding as the college literally installed a much needed third floor. Progress is audible. Happy 50th anniversary Belk College. Keep pounding!

What I say all of the time - the class I disliked the most during my time at UNCC working on my MBA - Business Law. The class I have used the most during my career - Business Law! Every job I have had since 1981, including my two corporate board seats, selected me because of the combination of my undergraduate engineering degree and my MBA. So, my MBA has made my 40 plus-year career possible.

Most prevalent memory is of a presentation I had to give in a Business Communications class. We were supposed to have an "attention-getting" introduction. My presentation was on self defense and my attention-getting intro was a karate scream, Kiai! Multiple students jumped and a few cried out in surprise. I was a little embarrassed but got a decent grade for the presentation.

Dr. Jack Hogue was the Dean of the Business Honors Program. I'll never forget the time I met with him to talk more about the Program. He took a personal interest in me and my story and, as one of the only Black students in the program at the time (and maybe even the only black male, if I recall), Dr. Hogue took on a mentor role towards me and always made sure I was welcome and felt special. It made all the difference in me striving to graduate at the top of my class, with Honors. I'm forever grateful to him, the Belk College, and the BHP.
