Leveraging Risk Management to Reduce the Financial Impact of COVID-19

The pandemic has had far-reaching effects on individuals, businesses and economies worldwide. Risk management is helping to inform and guide individuals and businesses as they manage the impact of COVID-19 and develop post-pandemic plans. This session, featuring a diverse panel of North Carolina-based risk management and insurance leaders, will offer a broad perspective on emerging issues and trends, including: business interruption, legal liability, technology/security, alternative and remote work, workers compensation, financial planning and possible upcoming legislation.

About the Speakers

Timothy "Tim" Flanagan, Jr. began his career with MassMutual in 1989 in Philadelphia. In 2004, he took over as General Agent of MassMutual Carolinas. Under his leadership, the firm has experienced substantial growth and has expanded its service area. A graduate in finance and business from Cabrini College in Radnor, Pennsylvania, Tim also completed the executive development program from the University of Virginia’s Darden Business School.

As chief executive officer of the Independent Insurance Agents of North Carolina (IIANC), Aubie Knight works with the Board of Directors to help set the strategic direction and vision of the statewide trade association that represents nearly 1,000 independent insurance agencies. He is the responsible for leading the staff in the implementation of the tactics needed to move the organization in that direction. A native Georgian, he is a graduate of the University of Georgia, and a huge Bulldog fan.

Jessica L. Medlin graduated from UNC Charlotte’s Belk College of Business in 2005 with a bachelor's degree in finance with a risk management and insurance concentration. She Joined ECM Solutions, an independent insurance agency, in 2008. She services clients nationwide as a senior vice president. During this time, Jessica also obtained her CIC, chaired Young Agents of North Carolina, chaired IIACM, and was voted Young Agent of the Year by her peers at the IIANC all before having her twins.  Her area of expertise is focused around energy and technology.    

Darin K. Stafford has served as Chief Financial Officer of AmWINS since October 2016. Darin joined AmWINS from Remington Outdoor Company where, since 2009, he served as vice president, finance and led a 40-member finance team with broad responsibility over corporate, operational and strategic finance, investor relations, shared services, treasury, risk management and real estate. Before joining Remington, Darin worked at PricewaterhouseCoopers for 15 years, including a 3-year rotation in London, England. Darin is a 1994 graduate of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a bachelor’s degree in both accounting and finance.

Tom Marshall served as regional vice president of Auto-Owners Insurance Co. from 1988 to 2004. He has also chaired the Governing Committee of the North Carolina Rate Bureau, which has statutory responsibility for all automobile, homeowners, dwelling and workers compensation rate filings in NC. He also served on the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Beach and Fair Plans and the South Carolina Beach Plan. He holds the Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriter, Chartered Life Underwriter and Certified Insurance Counselor designations. Tom received a bachelor's degree from Wake Forest University and MBA from the Wharton School of Finance at the University of Pennsylvania.

The Dean's Leadership Series aims to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Belk College of Business and give back to the Charlotte community by welcoming distinguished guest speakers, executive business practitioners, and thought leaders who will share their insights and experiences regarding current challenges and future opportunities facing our business community. Each Dean’s Leadership Series session will bring together a panel of experts who will shed light on a pressing topic facing business leaders.
