About the Speakers

Karin Liljegren ‘90, FAIA, IIDA, has devoted herself to Los Angeles since she moved there in 1991 to attend graduate school at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Working for 15 years with Killefer Flammang Architects (KFA), she focused much of her work on the adaptive reuse of historic structures, converting 12 historic high-rise buildings (more than 3,000 units) in downtown L.A. and Hollywood.

Liljegren founded the architecture and interiors firm Omgivning in 2009, as the recession was threatening to halt downtown Los Angeles’s resurgence. Omgivning – Swedish for “environment” or “ambience” – has worked on more than 400 projects in Los Angeles, including hotels, multi-family housing, restaurants, bars, creative offices and theaters.

A New Jersey native, Liljegren received her bachelor’s in architecture from UNC Charlotte’s College of Arts + Architecture and her master’s in architecture from UCLA. She was named to the College of Fellows by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) in 2020.
