Master of Science in Real Estate
Master of Science of Real Estate graduate, John Bush '18 describes the Belk College of Business as "Charlotte’s Best Kept Secret" with expert faculty, close connections to industry and an ideal location in the heart of uptown Charlotte.

What degree did you pursue and why?

I am pursuing a Master of Science of Real Estate because I am very interested in the real estate market especially post 2008. Real estate is a global asset class embodying physical building characteristics and those of intangible financial assets alike. I also believe the real estate and infrastructure industries will benefit greatly under (and perhaps as a consequence of) the Trump Administration.

Why did you choose the Belk College of Business over others?

The Belk College of Business offered a focused real estate curriculum, expert faculty, close connections to industry and an ideal location in the heart of uptown Charlotte.

What lessons have you learned in your courses that you were able to apply on the job?

I had an internship with MedSouth Healthcare Properties, a startup investment firm focusing on the acquisition and management of medical office buildings. I found this to be a unique opportunity given that in school we studied how the healthcare real estate market comprises less than 3% of U.S. commercial property physical stock, yet is worth nearly 14% by valuation. Additionally, my classwork and professors have given me the skills and experience to effectively analyze real estate transactions and confidently communicate with working professionals in the industry.

What activities are you involved in when not working/studying?

I enjoy french cooking, exercising, listening to live music and spending time with my friends and family.

What was the best part of your academic experience?

By far the most valuable part of my experience has been getting to know and building relationships with my classmates, professors and mentors.
