Master of Accountancy (MACC)
A former public school teacher, Michelle Burnette turned to the Belk College of Business after deciding to make a career change. She discovered the promising career paths afforded to professional accountants and chose to pursue her Master of Accountancy (MACC) degree. As a result of faculty support and the MACC program's strong recruiting pipeline, Michelle has secured a role as an Assurance Associate at PwC upon graduation.
What degree did you pursue and why?

I was a public school teacher for Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools for four years. I knew that I wanted to change directions with my career, but was unsure what I wanted to do. To get some guidance, I visited a few information sessions for the Belk College at the Center City Campus to hear about the different programs available. After learning about the MACC program, I was excited to hear about the opportunities available to someone with this degree. I knew then that I wanted to create those same opportunities for myself.

What was the best part of your academic experience?

The best aspect of my MACC experience was the faculty and how involved they are in preparing me for my career. In less than a year, they helped me secure a future position as an assurance associate for PricewaterhouseCoopers, encouraged me to study and prepare for all four parts of the CPA exam and gave me valuable advice on transitioning into the accounting profession. Their guidance and support has been invaluable.

How would you describe the Belk College of Business to someone considering a master’s program?

From the first time I visited, I felt like the Belk College was the right place for me. The faculty is happy to speak with you about your options and the best course of action for you and your goals. As a career changer, I was not the typical student, but the MACC Program Director, Dr. Jack Cathey, walked me through exactly what I should do to achieve my specific goals. The faculty want success for all students in the program. It is definitely worth the time to visit an information session and learn more about about what the Belk College has to offer!

Why did you choose the Belk College of Business over others?

I had an excellent experience at UNC Charlotte as an undergraduate student and wanted a similar experience in graduate school. It was my first choice when considering where to get my degree. I have been beyond pleased with the faculty, staff and fellow students in the program.

What activities are you involved in when not working/studying?

I decided to become more active and now spend a lot of time on fitness and running. It is such a great stress reliever and it helps me feel my best. I also cook and bake often. It has been a great way to save money while in school, and it contributes to a healthier lifestyle. I think that is a big factor to success! When I’m not exercising or cooking, I enjoy spending time relaxing at home with my boyfriend and dog, and I love to travel!
