Why did you choose to attend UNC Charlotte?
First and foremost, UNC Charlotte is home to me. Both of my sisters are proud alumni of UNC Charlotte. I spent my childhood years listening to my older sisters discuss their academic endeavors with family members and friends. I was frequently on campus to visit my sisters or to attend a basketball game or two with my grandfather. I always knew that I would continue my sisters’ legacy by joining the 49er family. Furthermore, I was impressed with the notability of the Belk College of Business; this also influenced and solidified my decision in attending UNC Charlotte. With the Belk College of Business being located in the city of Charlotte, I knew that there would be many professional opportunities within the city that relate directly to my studies within the university.
Why did you choose to join the Business Honors Program (BHP)?
BHP surrounds me with likeminded individuals that strive to better themselves and their community. Through BHP, I have the opportunity to network with my peers and educators in order to improve and enhance my skills within an academic and business setting. The program stresses professional growth, motivation, determination, critical thinking, and integrity. I chose BHP because I want to grow academically and hone professional skills for future success.
What has been your greatest or most defining experience throughout your time in BHP thus far?
Although there have been numerous defining experiences that BHP has offered, I believe that the most influential experience was the mock interview. I have not had many experiences with formal interviews, yet I understand the importance of interviews when starting a professional career. Through BHP, I was able to meet recruiters from noteworthy organizations, such as Bank of America and Barings, in order to practice my interviewing skills and interact with mentors in the business field. This experience allowed me to spend time with business professionals who also gave me valuable guidance and assistance on how to achieve an outstanding interview.
What student organizations are you involved with on campus?
I am currently involved in the program: Service Charlotte. This is a student-led organization that connects UNC Charlotte to the city of Charlotte community. This program organizes a day of volunteering. Service Charlotte will rally UNC Charlotte’s student organizations/groups and pair them with volunteering opportunities and nonprofit organizations across the city. I serve as the Logistics Director of the organization, and I assist and lead in the overall planning of the annual event.
Have you studied abroad? If so, please tell us about your experience
During the summer of 2019, I participated in a study abroad program in Israel. I actively worked on an archaeological site in Mt. Zion. I wanted to experience something that was completely different than my course of study. Spending time and participating with people from all walks of life was engaging, and we were all there for the purpose of knowledge and understanding. I was intrigued with the systematic and structured forethought put into the mapping of the dig site. I would get excited as I unearthed artifacts from a by-gone era. Indulging in the local food, visiting museums, and learning about the multicultural history of another country was inspiring. It has further opened my eyes to the world of culture, history, and archaeology.
Have you done an internship? If so, please tell us about your experience(s)
I recently interned with University City Partners. I selected this organization because I wanted to become involved in a civically engaged company and gather understanding of the impact nonprofits have within the city of Charlotte. I was able to work in an office setting where I read and interpreted financial documents, created spreadsheets to update the organization’s data, and attended meetings with leaders across Charlotte. My time with University City Partners has given me valuable experience with partnering the public and private sector while exploring and implementing ideas for beneficial community development and success.
How will BHP help you land your dream job or set you up for success after graduation?
BHP is an inspiring and motivating program that has allowed me to grow academically and professionally. The program has mentoring events with professionals and businesses from our local community. BHP is giving me the self-confidence and understanding to transition my academic studies into real-world applications. I can confidently say BHP has influenced me and will continue to influence my journey to be successful in the business realm.
