Marketing
Selim Ayyildiz is a Marketing major and Journalism minor who won first place in the Niblock Student Center Summer Internship Photo Contest.
What major did you pursue and why?

I majored in Marketing with a minor in Journalism. I wanted to go into an industry that appreciates creativity and encourages collaboration in a business atmosphere. I wanted to go into work expecting a new project, something that will challenge me to think outside the box and work with my peers. I did not want to be stuck behind a desk doing the same routine every day, which is why Marketing was the ideal major.

Why did you choose the Belk College of Business/UNC Charlotte?

Diversity is a huge priority to me and I knew that UNC Charlotte focuses on the importance of inclusivity and diversity. Charlotte also has many opportunities for business students to further develop their careers. Charlotte is definitely the place to be for post-graduation.

What activities were you involved in when not working or studying?

When I’m not with friends or family, which is extremely rare, I try to spend a lot of my time outside hiking, playing volleyball, or swimming. I also make an effort to keep up with market and competitive trends by reading articles from Forbes, Fortune, AdWeek, and AdAge. I think it’s extremely important to stay updated with trends especially if you’re in marketing.
I also try to stay active with campus organizations like the professional business fraternity, Alpha Kappa Psi, and I write for our school newspaper, Niner Times.

What has been the best part of your academic experience so far?

The best part of my academic experience has certainly been the internships I’ve been able to experience during my four years here at UNC Charlotte. From working in sports entertainment, to health care, to a Fortune 500 financial services company, I’ve truly been exposed to many different industries just within four years. Also, I love the fact that there’s an organization for everything, literally everything!

What is your favorite class that you have taken and why?

Business Communication with Professor Frances Walton. This class focused on real-world topics and personal development that I believe every student should learn before entering the work field. From polishing oral presentations to resume and cover letter critiques, the skills I learned in Business Communication will certainly be used.

How would you describe the Belk College of Business to someone who is thinking about applying?

A group of determined and driven people who are willing to learn, help, and want to make an impact in the world.

If you received a scholarship or financial aid, how did that help you? What scholarship did you receive?

Financial aid is has certainly helped me get to where I am today. It was such a humbling experience being the first person in my family to attend and eventually complete college. It set the tone and showed my younger siblings that they are capable of doing anything they set their minds to. Receiving that diploma is such a huge accomplishment and fulfilled my dreams as well as my parents' dreams. My parents have sacrificed so much for me to be where I am today; all I want to do is make them proud and be able to take care of them.

What are your plans after graduation?

I plan on staying in Charlotte and working at Ally Financial as a Marketing Analyst and continue to grow within the company. I’d like to eventually earn my MBA while working full-time as well.
