Belk College Days of Service connect alumni and students through hands on service.
45 alumni and students participate in first Belk College Day of Service
This spring, the Alumni Council hosted the first Belk College Day of Service projects in support of UNC Charlotte's National Volunteer Week events. The Belk College staked our claim on the Monday and Saturday community events, partnering with Classroom Central and the Carolina Thread Trail.
On Monday, April 7, eight students from the Business Honors Program and seven alumni assisted CMS teachers shoppoing for school supplies and loading their cars at Classroom Central's free store.
Dean Steve Ott helped load teachers' cars with their 25+ school supply items. "This is a way for us to reciprocate, give back and be interconnected with the Charlotte Community."
The Alumni Council's event chair for the project, Gerald Burgess '12, ensured the supply check-out stations were running smoothly, and shelves stayed stocked. "The Belk College of Business is here to be a helpful hand in the community."
Alumni and students worked together to assist 100+ CMS teachers shopping at the free store, and each teacher was able to take home 25+ school supplies for their classroom.
On Saturday, April 12, eighteen students and twelve alumni participated in a Trail Work Day at the Carolina Thread Trail in Mount Pleasant, North Carolina. Volunteers cleared brush and cleaned a 2.1 mile section of the natural surface trail in prepartion for an upcoming 10K race.
Matt MacCaughelty '09 MBA, was the Alumni Council's event chair for the project. "It's a great experience to connect with students and alumni in an outdoor setting while making the community a better place all at the same time! "
By the end of the week, 45 Belk College alumni and student volunteers had contributed 142.5 hours of service to the Charlotte community. "Belk College Day of Service is a unique opportunity to engage alumni and students in settings outside of the office or classroom," said Kinsey Sheehan, alumni relations manager. In total, UNC Charlotte volunteers contributed more than 250 service hours during the National Volunteer Week of events, the equivalent of nearly $6,000 in labor costs.
