Finance

The Department of Finance is dedicated to maintaining and further advancing its leadership role in high quality educational programs, basic and applied research, and service to the profession and the community.

The educational focus of the department is to provide students with valuable core skills related to critical thinking, problem-solving, communications and teamwork, as well as a wide range of specific knowledge and skills that are necessary to perform effectively in a variety of careers in the financial sector.

The department administers the undergraduate programs in finance and risk management and insurance, as well as the MBA concentrations in real estate finance and development, business finance, applied investment management and financial institutions/commercial banking. Additionally, Finance faculty are actively involved in the Master of Science in Mathematical Finance, the Master of Science in Economics with a concentration in Finance, and the Ph.D. in Business Administration/Finance concentration.

Through innovative applied research our award-winning, Ph.D. credentialed professors make significant contributions to applied and basic research. Our faculty are published in their fields of expertise and many serve as consultants to top businesses around the globe.

Department Distinctions

Our faculty has published extensively in major journals including The Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, Review of Financial Studies, Journal of Financial and Quantitative Analysis and Financial Management. Finance faculty also serve on editorial boards of many prestigious journals.

Faculty research has been featured in The Washington Post, The Charlotte Observer, CNN and CNBC, among others.

Members of the department are very active in national and regional professional organizations, including the American Finance Association; Midwest Finance Association; American Risk and Insurance Association; Eastern Finance Association; Financial Executives Institute; Financial Management Association and Southern Finance Association.

A number of Finance professors have been recognized for their outstanding work in the classroom, receiving the Bank of America Teaching Award, the Gray's MBA Teaching Award and the Belk College Outstanding Teaching Award.
