Road closures affect traffic near UNC Charlotte main campus

Thursday, June 21, 2012

Visitors to UNC Charlotte should be aware of a major construction project in the area which will affect traffic flow in the University City area.

Specifically, southbound NC 49 (University City Boulevard)is closed at the intersection of US 29 (North Tryon Street) and is expected to remain closed through most of 2011. Southbound traffic is being diverted to Harris Boulevard and motorists should allow extra time to travel in the area.

The closure is part of a project that will redesign the 29/49 intersection, including work at the I-85 Connector and University City Boulevard. The project will improve safety, connectivity and opportunities for development. Project amenities will include sidewalk, planting strips, storm water improvements, bicycle lanes and water main installations. Upon completion, this project will provide safer travel for all modes of transportation including motorists, pedestrians, bicyclists and transit.
