Scholarships available for GMAT preparation courses

The UNC Charlotte M.B.A. program is partnering with the National Black M.B.A. Association and The Princeton Review to offer scholarships for Graduate Management Aptitude Test (GMAT) preparation courses.

The goal of the scholarship program is to assist high-potential candidates whose backgrounds are traditionally underrepresented in M.B.A. programs.

“For most business schools, a prospective student’s performance on the GMAT is one of the key factors in the admissions decision,” said Ron Veith, director of graduate programs in UNC Charlotte’s Belk College of Business. “We hope this new partnership will enable scholarship recipients to increase their ability to attain a high GMAT score.”

The scholarships, valued as high as $1250, will cover GMAT preparation courses offered at The Princeton Review’s centers in uptown and the Arboretum area in south Charlotte. Course schedules are available at www.princetonreview.com.

According to AACSB International, the organization that accredits business schools, only about 5.3 percent of U.S. M.B.A. students are African-American. Hispanic Americans represent about 5.2 percent of the M.B.A. student population, while less than one percent is Native American.

Students who wish to apply for the scholarships must hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university with an undergraduate grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher. They also must apply for admission to the UNC Charlotte M.B.A. program prior to applying for the scholarship. Preference will be given to applicants with professional work experience, as well as to candidates from underrepresented groups. Application forms are available at www.mba.uncc.edu.
